Baaghi Albele | Repertwahr Festival Season 11| Day 1
Synopsis
Johny & Minnie Makhija, husband and wife, are famous actors from a renowned theatre company in Ludhiana. During a performance of Hamlet, a young and handsome soldier of an underground rebel organisation B.O.L (Sukhwinder Singh) leaves just as Johny begins the soliloquy, "to be or not to be." Johny is outraged. Johny would be even more outraged if he knew that Sukhi visited Minnie Makhija in her dressing room. A short time later, following the prohibition orders of the government, all performances are stopped, theatres are closed and artists are hunted to be prosecuted or killed if they even as much as smelled of dissent or revolt. Johny & Minnie’s theatre is ransacked and they are forced to hide underground.
Meanwhile, Sukhi has fled to Rangoon and joined forces of his organisation to fight the dictatorial regime in India and free art & artists . By mistake they entrust a government spy Prof. Dharampal, who is returning to Ludhiana, with the secret whereabouts of all artists, journalists, writers and intellectuals hiding underground. Sukhi realizes that the man is actually a danger to the entire underground movement and safety of art and artist (including his beloved Minnie Makhija). He follows him to Ludhiana. Prof. Dharampal is killed before he can contact his superior Inspector Kilmadi. Sukhi endangered, seeks shelter with Johny and Minnie’s theatre ensemble, and they hides him. The plot becomes complex with Johny impersonating the spy Prof Dharampal, Inspector Kilmadi trying to seduce Minnie Makhija, and finally the theatre troupe planning and executing an escape in the most theatrical manner. Johny succeeds to even impersonates the ‘High Command’ of the regime and ultimately makes possible for their theatre troupe to escape to England.
This masterpiece, pairs comic absurdity with grim reality. Within the dismal setting of Indian bans, censorships and general crackdowns on comedians, journalists, writers and artists, absolutely all stake-holders participate in this comedy.
